Talk in ISL
India is home to nearly 63 million deaf individuals, and only a small fraction of working-age deaf adults are employed — partly because of limited access to education, partly because the technology around us doesn’t speak their language. Talk in ISL (TIISL) is the Longtail AI Foundation’s flagship effort to close that gap.
What we are building
We are assembling a large, open dataset of Indian Sign Language and the machine-learning tooling to make it useful — both for researchers and for everyday users who want to learn, practise, or be understood. Our public learning tool is already live:
Principles
- Open — the dataset and the technology built on it are accessible to researchers and to anyone using them to improve their daily lives.
- Responsible — communication tools require ongoing care; we treat model quality and behaviour as an ethical responsibility, not a feature.
- Quality — being free does not mean being second-rate. The bar is the bar.
